- Koh Phangan island is mostly quiet jungle and small beaches, and the Full Moon Party takes up only one corner of it, Haad Rin at the south-east tip.
- Thong Sala on the west coast is the main town and port, with shops, cafes and the island's food markets.
- The north-west coast has the calm sunset beaches, while the east coast is wilder, with bays like Than Sadet and Thong Nai Pan.
- Accommodation near Haad Rin is often booked out around the party and minimum stays are common, so many people stay on Koh Samui and take the night speedboat.
- A Full Moon Party transfer from Koh Samui costs ฿890 one way or ฿1290 round trip, paid in cash at the pier.
Koh Phangan island is far quieter than its party reputation suggests: most of it is green hills, small fishing bays and slow beach towns, and the Full Moon Party fills only one beach at the south-east tip. At 5 am on party night, when Haad Rin is still shaking, people a few bays away are asleep under a fan with nothing but geckos for company.
So should you add days to the trip? For many people, yes, but not everyone. Here is the island in plain words, so you can decide.
What is Koh Phangan island really like away from Haad Rin?
Away from Haad Rin, Koh Phangan feels like a slower, rougher Koh Samui from a few decades back. Roads climb through jungle, beaches are small and separate, and evenings mean a beach bar with a few dozen people, not thousands.
The island has a strong wellness and yoga scene on the west side, a few backpacker hubs and a lot of families who come for the calm. The Full Moon Party happens on one beach, Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach), once a month, and the rest of the island carries on as normal on that night.
The honest downside: it is less polished than Koh Samui. Some roads are steep and broken, some beaches are only easy to reach by boat, and nightlife outside the party weeks is quiet.
Thong Sala: the main town and where you arrive by day
Thong Sala is the island's working town on the west coast: the main pier for daytime ferries, banks, pharmacies, supermarkets and scooter rentals. If you come over by daytime ferry, you almost certainly land here.
It is not a pretty town, but it is useful. The food markets are the best reason to linger in the evening: cheap Thai dishes, fruit shakes and grilled seafood, with a bigger walking street market on some nights of the week (check locally, the days can change).
Stay here if you want convenience and easy taxis to anywhere. Skip it if you want a beach on your doorstep.
Haad Rin on a normal day
Haad Rin is a small village on a narrow peninsula between two bays: Sunrise Beach, where the party happens, and Sunset Beach on the other side. Outside the party nights it is a busy backpacker strip with bars, hostels, tattoo shops and street food.
Around the party it changes fast. A regular Full Moon Party draws around 20,000 people, and accommodation near Haad Rin is often booked out, with minimum stays common around the party. Expect music most of the night and a lot of tired faces at breakfast.
My view: Haad Rin is great for the party and a day or two around it if you are young and social. It is not where you go for a peaceful holiday.
Where are the quiet beaches on Koh Phangan?
The quiet beaches are on the north-west, north and east coasts, well away from Haad Rin.
The north-west and north coast
The north-west is the calm, pretty side of the island, with beaches that face the sunset. Areas like Srithanu, Haad Yao and Haad Salad have clear water, beach restaurants and a lot of yoga studios and health cafes.
Further along the north coast, Chaloklum is a fishing village with a relaxed feel, and Bottle Beach sits in its own cove. Bottle Beach is usually reached by longtail boat or a rough road, so going there is a small adventure in itself.
This side is the best reason to spend extra days on Koh Phangan: easy swimming, quiet evenings and sunsets over the sea. Couples and anyone who wants rest after the party usually love it.
The east coast: Than Sadet and Thong Nai Pan
The east coast is the wildest part of the island, with few roads and deep bays backed by jungle. It suits people who want to switch off completely.
Thong Nai Pan in the north-east has two bays with soft sand and some of the island's nicer resorts. The east coast is far from Haad Rin by road, so it is not a base for the party night; book it for the days after, not the night itself.
Jungle, viewpoints and waterfalls inland
The middle of Koh Phangan is hilly and covered in forest, and much of it is protected land. You can hike to viewpoints over the coast and to small waterfalls, some of them inside a national park area.
Than Sadet waterfall on the east side is known for old royal visits, and Phaeng waterfall in the centre is the easiest to combine with a short jungle walk. Waterfalls are best in and after the rainy months; in the dry season some are only a trickle, so ask locally before you make the trip.
Good to know before you go:
- Wear proper shoes, trails are rocky and slippery after rain.
- Carry water and insect repellent, shade is good but the air is humid.
- Do not ride a scooter on steep jungle roads if you are not experienced; a taxi is cheaper than a hospital.
- Avoid hiking the day after the party: you will not enjoy it, and tired legs on wet rocks are a bad mix.
Other parties on Koh Phangan, if one night is not enough
The Full Moon Party is not the only night out. Around the full moon week there is the Half Moon Festival in the jungle near Ban Tai (twice a month), Black Moon Culture around the new moon, and several beach clubs.
These are smaller and more focused on the music than the full moon night. They run on their own dates, not on the full moon, so check before you plan. The overview of Half Moon, Black Moon and other Koh Phangan parties explains what each one is like.
Staying on Koh Samui and visiting Koh Phangan for the night
Plenty of people decide the island is lovely but sleep on Koh Samui anyway, and just go over for the party. The catch: regular ferries stop in the early evening and there are no regular ferries back at night, so a daytime ferry plan does not work for the party itself. The article on the last ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan on full moon night covers that in detail.
The night transfer works like this:
- A minivan picks you up at your hotel or villa anywhere on Koh Samui, at a time you choose, from 11:30 in the morning to 10:30 at night.
- The speedboat leaves Bangrak pier (Big Buddha area) and reaches Haad Rin pier in 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the sea.
- The party is a few minutes walk from the pier. Entrance is 200 THB in cash at the beach.
- Return boats leave Haad Rin pier every hour from 0:00 to 6:00, and a minivan takes you back to your hotel.
Prices are ฿890 one way and ฿1290 round trip per person, with free online booking and cash at the pier. For the next party nights, see the Full Moon Party dates for 2026 and 2027; the next ones are 27 October 2026 (Tuesday) and 24 November 2026 (Tuesday).
When you are ready, the Full Moon Party transfer from Koh Samui can be booked online for free, with payment at the pier on the day.
Staying on Koh Samui? Hotel pickup, speedboat from Bangrak pier to Haad Rin and boats back every hour from 0:00 to 6:00. One way ฿890, round trip ฿1290, free booking, pay cash at the pier.
Book your transferHow many extra days, and where to spend them?
Two or three extra days on Koh Phangan is the sweet spot for most people. One day to recover, one or two to see the north-west beaches or a waterfall.
Each area does one thing well, so pick the base for those extra days by what you want from them.
| Area | Feels like | Best for | Downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haad Rin | Backpacker village, loud around the party | The party and social nights | Noise, crowds, minimum stays around the party |
| Thong Sala | Working town and port | Convenience, markets, transport | Not a beach holiday |
| North-west (Srithanu, Haad Yao, Haad Salad) | Calm, yoga and cafes | Sunsets, swimming, rest | Far from Haad Rin at night |
| North coast (Chaloklum, Bottle Beach) | Fishing village, secluded cove | Quiet days, a little adventure | Harder access, few shops |
| East coast (Than Sadet, Thong Nai Pan) | Wild bays, jungle | Switching off, nicer resorts | Long, steep roads |
If you are torn between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan as a base for the party week, the full comparison is on the page about whether to stay on Koh Samui or Koh Phangan for the party.
- Party only: sleep on Koh Samui, do the night transfer, and see Koh Phangan another time.
- Party plus rest: party night from Koh Samui, then a daytime ferry to Thong Sala a day or two later for a few quiet nights on the west coast.
- Long stay: base yourself on the north-west coast for a week and add the jungle parties.
Whatever you choose, book Koh Phangan beds around the party early, and keep the night of the party itself simple.
Questions and answers
Is Koh Phangan only a party island?
No. The Full Moon Party takes place on one beach in Haad Rin, and most of the island is quiet beaches, jungle and small villages. Many visitors come for yoga, diving or just rest and never go to the party.
Which side of Koh Phangan has the best sunsets?
The west and north-west coast face the sunset, with areas like Srithanu, Haad Yao and Haad Salad. Thong Sala is also on the west side, but its beach is less pretty for swimming.
Can I do a day trip to Koh Phangan from Koh Samui?
Yes, regular ferries run between the islands during the day, so a day trip to Thong Sala and nearby beaches is easy. Check the ferry times before you go, because they stop in the early evening.
Do I need a scooter on Koh Phangan?
Not necessarily. Taxis go between the main areas, and they are the safer choice if you are not used to steep, uneven roads. Riding a scooter after a party night is a bad idea.
Is Koh Phangan good for families?
Yes, outside Haad Rin. The north-west and north-east bays are calm and family-friendly, and the party is far enough away not to matter there.
When are the waterfalls worth visiting?
Waterfalls are fullest during and after the rainy months. In the dry season some are only a small stream, so ask locally before you hike.
Can I go to the Full Moon Party if I stay on the quiet side of Koh Phangan?
You can, but the roads to Haad Rin are long and taxis are busy on party night, so plan the way there and back before the evening. Some people find it simpler to stay on Koh Samui and take the night speedboat.
