Where to Stay for the Full Moon Party: Samui Hotel or Haad Rin?

An honest look at the party night itself: what sleeping in Haad Rin is really like, and how it compares with going back to your own Koh Samui hotel by speedboat. The bigger island-versus-island question is covered elsewhere; this is about one night and the morning after.

The short answer
  • For most people the best answer to where to stay for the Full Moon Party is the Koh Samui hotel they already have, with a night speedboat there and back.
  • The party runs from dark, about 7 pm, until sunrise, about 6 to 7 am, so a Haad Rin bungalow near the beach is loud all night.
  • Accommodation near Haad Rin is often booked out around the party, and minimum stays are common.
  • Return boats leave Haad Rin pier every hour from 0:00 to 6:00, and a minivan takes you from the boat back to your Koh Samui hotel.
  • A round trip transfer from Koh Samui costs ฿1290 per person, paid in cash at the pier, with no prepayment.

Where to stay for the Full Moon Party comes down to one question: do you want to sleep near the noise or far from it? For most people the answer is their own Koh Samui hotel, reached by a night speedboat, because at 4 am a quiet room and a proper shower beat a hot bungalow with bass coming through the walls.

There are good reasons to stay in Haad Rin too, and I will be fair about them. This guide is only about the night itself; if you are choosing an island for the whole trip, read the full comparison of staying on Koh Samui or Koh Phangan for the party first.

Where to stay for the Full Moon Party: the short answer

Stay on Koh Samui if you value sleep, comfort and choice of hotels, and you are happy to leave the beach on a boat. Stay in Haad Rin if you want to walk home from the party at any hour and do not care about sleep.

The deciding detail is simple: the party goes on until sunrise, about 6 to 7 am. Whoever sleeps near the beach sleeps with it, whether they went or not.

What is it like to sleep in Haad Rin on party night?

Honestly, you mostly do not sleep. Haad Rin sits on a narrow strip of land between two bays, and the bars on Sunrise Beach each run their own sound system through the night.

This is the view from the beach at 3 am, and the bass carries well beyond the sand.

A regular Full Moon Party draws around 20,000 people, so the lanes are full of people walking, singing and looking for their friends until morning. Earplugs help, but they do not stop bass. Light sleepers and anyone who wants a calm holiday should look elsewhere.

The upside is real, though. You can drop by your room, change clothes, nap for an hour and go back. No pier, no boat, no schedule.

Minimum stays and prices around the party

Around the full moon, rooms near Haad Rin are often booked out, and minimum stays are common, so you may have to book several nights to get the one you want. Rates often rise around the party too, so compare before you commit.

Things to check before you book a Haad Rin room:

  • How many nights the minimum stay is around the party date.
  • How close the room is to Sunrise Beach; a few streets back makes a difference.
  • Whether there is air conditioning: the nights are warm and windows open mean more noise.
  • The cancellation terms, because party dates sometimes move when the full moon falls on a Buddhist holiday.
  • Where you can safely keep your passport and phone while you are on the beach.

If the minimum stay is four nights and you only care about one, that is money spent on a room you will not enjoy. That is the moment to think about Koh Samui.

Sleeping in your Koh Samui hotel: how the night works

You keep your hotel, go to the party by speedboat and come back whenever you are ready. You do not need to choose a return time in advance.

Here is the night from start to finish:

  1. A minivan picks you up at your hotel or villa anywhere on Koh Samui. Pickup slots run from 11:30 - 12:00 Noon to 10:00 - 10:30 PM.
  2. The speedboat leaves Bangrak pier (Big Buddha area) and takes 20 to 30 minutes to Haad Rin pier, depending on the sea.
  3. The party is a few minutes walk from the pier. Entrance is 200 THB in cash at the beach.
  4. Boats back leave Haad Rin pier every hour from 0:00 to 6:00. You show your ticket badge and take the next one.
  5. On Koh Samui you are put on the transfer list and a minivan drops you at your hotel.

The price is ฿890 one way or ฿1290 round trip per person, and you pay cash at the pier on the day. The full details of the way back are on the page about getting back to Koh Samui after the party.

A sample night from a Koh Samui hotel

Many guests like an early evening pickup, such as the 6:00 - 6:30 PM slot, so they reach Haad Rin around the time it gets dark and the main party starts, about 7 pm. That leaves the afternoon free for a swim, a proper meal and a nap, which matters more than people think.

Others prefer a later slot, up to 10:00 - 10:30 PM, and skip the first hours. Either way, the night ends the same: a boat back when you are ready, a minivan to the hotel door and your own bed, with no checkout at 11 am and no packing with a headache.

The other quiet advantage is your things. Your passport, spare cash and laptop stay in the hotel safe on another island, and you take only what you need to the beach. The list of what to wear and bring to the Full Moon Party helps keep that small.

Booking the round trip transfer from Koh Samui takes a couple of minutes online and costs nothing until you pay at the pier.

Staying on Koh Samui? Hotel pickup, speedboat from Bangrak pier to Haad Rin and boats back every hour from 0:00 to 6:00. One way ฿890, round trip ฿1290, free booking, pay cash at the pier.

Is the night speedboat back a downside?

A little, yes. The downside of the Samui option is waiting at the pier in the small hours with tired, sandy people, and the sea at night can be choppy.

But with boats every hour until 6:00, you are never stuck. Leave at 1 am if you have had enough, or stay for sunrise and take the last one. Most guests are in bed on Koh Samui before people in Haad Rin manage to fall asleep.

A few tips that make the return easy:

  • Agree a meeting point and a time with your group before you split up on the beach.
  • Keep your ticket badge somewhere safe and dry, not in a shorts pocket.
  • Do not get on a boat if you can barely stand; sit near the pier, drink water and take the next one.

What about staying elsewhere on Koh Phangan?

Staying in a quiet part of Koh Phangan, such as the west coast near Thong Sala, gives you calm nights and a beach holiday. For the party night itself, though, it is the awkward middle option.

You need a taxi to Haad Rin and another one home in the early morning, when everyone else wants one too. Do not ride a scooter back after the party: the roads are steep and dark, and accidents are common. If you choose this option, arrange the ride home before the night starts.

Which option suits you?

Be honest about what you want from the night and the day after.

  • Pick your Koh Samui hotel if you travel as a couple, a family with older teens, or a group that wants a good bed, a pool and choice of hotels. It is also the smart choice if you are only on the islands for a short trip.
  • Pick Haad Rin if you are young, travelling solo or with friends, plan several nights of partying and do not mind noise and basic rooms.
  • Pick another part of Koh Phangan if the party is a side trip in a longer, quiet holiday, and you are fine organising taxis.

One last practical point: whatever you choose, book early. Haad Rin beds go first, and sorting the transfer early means one less thing to think about on the day. Check the next date on the Full Moon Party schedule for 2026 and 2027, then plan your bed around it: the next parties are on 27 October 2026 (Tuesday) and 24 November 2026 (Tuesday).

Questions and answers

Can I sleep on the beach after the Full Moon Party?

People do doze on the sand at sunrise, but it is not a plan. Your phone, wallet and passport are at risk, and the morning sun gets hot quickly. A real bed, on Koh Samui or Koh Phangan, is worth it.

Is it cheaper to stay on Koh Phangan for the party?

Not always. Around the party, rooms near Haad Rin are often booked out and minimum stays are common, so you may pay for several nights. If you already have a hotel on Koh Samui, a round trip transfer at ฿1290 per person is often the simpler choice.

Do I have to leave the party at a fixed time if I stay on Koh Samui?

No. Boats leave Haad Rin pier every hour from 0:00 to 6:00, and you take whichever one suits you. You just show your ticket badge at the pier.

Can I take a one way transfer and stay on Koh Phangan after the party?

Yes, a one way ticket costs ฿890 per person. With a one way ticket you arrange your onward trip and your bed on Koh Phangan yourself.

How far is my Koh Samui hotel from the speedboat?

The minivan collects you from any area of Koh Samui and takes you to Bangrak pier in the Big Buddha area. The time on the road depends on where your hotel is, so choose a pickup slot that leaves you some spare time.

Is Haad Rin noisy on nights without the party?

Haad Rin is a lively backpacker village with bars on most nights, but the party night is on another level. The quieter nights are calmer, though it is still not a sleepy beach.

What if I booked a transfer and then found a room in Haad Rin?

There is no prepayment, so there is nothing to refund. Just let the booking team know through the contact form so the driver does not wait for you at your hotel.

Transfer facts checked on 26 October 2026. Prices and party dates can change: the booking form always shows the current ones.
