- The best Koh Samui full moon day is a lazy one: late breakfast, a short beach session, a nap and a proper meal before your pickup.
- Transfer pickups run in hourly slots from 11:30 - 12:00 Noon to 10:00 - 10:30 PM, so you can plan the day around the slot you choose.
- The main party starts when it gets dark, about 7 pm, and goes on until sunrise, so saving energy matters more than seeing more sights.
- The transfer costs ฿890 one way or ฿1290 round trip, paid in cash at the pier, plus 200 THB entrance in cash at the beach.
- Return boats leave Haad Rin pier every hour from 0:00 to 6:00, so you can leave the party when you are ready.
The best way to spend a Koh Samui full moon day is to do very little: sleep in, have a late breakfast, spend a short time on the beach, nap in the afternoon and eat a proper meal before your evening pickup. The party runs from dark until sunrise, and the people who enjoy it most are the ones who did not burn their energy by 5 pm.
Picture yourself on the sand in the afternoon, looking across the water at the hills of Koh Phangan on the horizon. In a few hours you will be on a speedboat heading there. The trick is to arrive fresh, not sunburned and already half tired.
What is the best plan for a Koh Samui full moon day?
Keep the day slow and the evening simple. The main party starts when it gets dark, about 7 pm, and goes on until about 6 to 7 am, so think of the day as the warm-up, not the main event.
Here is the rough shape I suggest to friends with an evening pickup:
- Sleep as long as you can, you will be up all night.
- Late breakfast around 10 or 11 am.
- A short beach or pool session, in the shade where possible.
- Back to the room for a nap in the hot part of the afternoon.
- A shower and a proper dinner.
- Pack a small bag and be in the lobby at the start of your pickup window.
It sounds boring on paper. It is the plan that works.
The one thing I would add is a quick check of the weather and the sea in the afternoon. You do not need to change anything, but if it looks windy, take a top that can get wet and put your phone in a pouch before you leave. Knowing that early saves a rushed search through the room at pickup time.
How do the pickup times shape your day?
Your pickup slot decides how much day you have. Pickups run every hour, from 11:30 - 12:00 Noon to 10:00 - 10:30 PM, and the driver collects you from your hotel or villa lobby in any area of Koh Samui.
This is how I would match the day to the slot:
| Pickup slot | Who it suits | How to spend the day |
|---|---|---|
| 11:30 - 12:00 Noon to 2:00 - 2:30 PM | People who want the afternoon beach bars and a daytime look at Haad Rin | Big breakfast, pack the night before, sleep on the boat if you can |
| 3:00 - 3:30 PM to 5:00 - 5:30 PM | People who want to arrive in daylight and watch the beach fill up | Late breakfast, short swim, early lunch, no nap needed |
| 6:00 - 6:30 PM to 8:00 - 8:30 PM | First-timers who want the main party from dark | The full lazy plan: beach, nap, dinner, then pickup |
| 9:00 - 9:30 PM to 10:00 - 10:30 PM | Night owls and people who want the peak hours only | Long nap, late dinner, arrive when the party is already loud |
For a first party, the evening slots are my favourite. You reach the beach around dark, when the night really starts. The article on what time the Full Moon Party starts and ends goes deeper into timing.
On 31 December the last pickup is earlier, 8:00 - 8:30 PM, so plan the New Year day around that.
Where should you spend the morning and early afternoon?
Stay near your hotel. The less you travel around the island on party day, the more energy you keep for the night.
A late breakfast and a walk on your nearest beach is plenty. If you are staying in the north, the beaches between Bophut and Bangrak have good views across to Koh Phangan, where the party happens.
What I would skip: a full day island tour, a long boat trip or a hike in the midday sun. They are great on another day. On full moon day they leave you sunburned, dehydrated and yawning by 9 pm.
If you want one sight, the Big Buddha is a short visit and sits in the same corner of the island as the pier the party boats leave from.
Why the afternoon nap matters more than you think
A nap is the single best investment of the day. An hour or two of sleep in the afternoon can be the difference between leaving at 1 am and staying for sunrise.
The hottest hours are also the hours when the sun does the most damage. Spend them in an air-conditioned room, with the curtains closed and an alarm set.
Cannot sleep in the afternoon? Lie down anyway with the lights off and your phone away. Even resting without sleep keeps your legs and your head fresher than another hour walking around in the heat, and the excitement usually catches up with you around midnight if you skipped it.
Drink water before you sleep and when you wake up. Buckets and dancing will dry you out later, so start the night well hydrated rather than trying to catch up on the beach.
What should you eat before the party?
Eat a proper meal, with rice or noodles and some protein, about an hour or two before your pickup. Street snacks on the beach are fine later, but they are not dinner.
Koh Samui has plenty of simple local restaurants and night food stalls in every area, so there is no need to travel for a good meal. Order something filling, avoid very spicy food if you are not used to it, and skip the heavy drinking at dinner.
A small tip from years of watching guests: people who eat well before the party almost never end up as the friend who needs to be carried to the pier.
What to pack in a small bag for the night
Pack light, because you will carry everything on a crowded beach for many hours. A small cross-body bag or a waterproof pouch is ideal.
- Cash in Thai baht: 200 THB for the entrance at the beach, plus money for the transfer at the pier and for drinks.
- Phone, charged to full, in a waterproof pouch.
- A photo or copy of your ID instead of your passport.
- Shoes you can walk in on sand and in the village, not new flip-flops.
- Your hotel name and area saved on your phone for the minivan back.
- A thin top for the boat back, when the night air can feel cool.
Leave jewellery, your passport and anything you would cry about losing in the hotel safe. The guide on what to wear and bring to the Full Moon Party has the full list, including body paint and outfits.
How the evening pickup and transfer work
The minivan collects you at your hotel, takes you to Bangrak pier in the Big Buddha area, and the speedboat crosses to Haad Rin pier in 20-30 minutes. You pay in cash at the pier: ฿890 one way or ฿1290 round trip per person, with no prepayment.
At the pier you get your ticket badge and a life jacket, and from Haad Rin pier the party is a few minutes walk. More about the Samui side is in the article on Bangrak pier.
Choose your pickup slot and book the transfer from Koh Samui for free on the Full Moon Party transfer page; you only pay at the pier on the day.
Staying on Koh Samui? Hotel pickup, speedboat from Bangrak pier to Haad Rin and boats back every hour from 0:00 to 6:00. One way ฿890, round trip ฿1290, free booking, pay cash at the pier.
Book your transferA quick checklist for the last hour before pickup
Do these five things before you go down to the lobby, and the rest of the night takes care of itself. Return boats leave Haad Rin pier every hour from 0:00 to 6:00, so you do not need to plan the end of the night now.
- Check the party date on the Full Moon Party schedule one more time.
- Count your cash and split it between two pockets.
- Put on sunscreen if you have an afternoon pickup, insect repellent if it is an evening one.
- Drink a big glass of water.
- Agree with your group where to meet if you lose each other on the beach.
Then go downstairs, meet the minivan and enjoy the night you rested for.
Questions and answers
Can I do an island tour on Koh Samui on the day of the Full Moon Party?
You can, but I would not. A full day tour in the heat leaves most people tired before the party even starts. Save it for the day before or a day or two after.
What time should I book my pickup for my first Full Moon Party?
The evening slots, from 6:00 - 6:30 PM to 8:00 - 8:30 PM, suit most first-timers. You arrive around dark, when the main party starts at about 7 pm, without spending the hot afternoon on the beach.
Is it a good idea to drink before the pickup?
A drink with dinner is fine, but starting early usually ends the night early. The party goes on until sunrise, so pace yourself and drink water.
Should I check out of my hotel on party day?
Not if you can avoid it. The minivan brings you back to your hotel after the party, and you will want a bed and a shower in the morning.
How much cash should I take?
Take enough for the transfer, paid in cash at the pier, the 200 THB entrance at the beach, and your food and drinks. Split it between two places so one lost pocket does not end your night.
Can I get picked up from any area of Koh Samui?
Yes. Pickups run from all areas of Koh Samui, including Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Maenam, Bangrak, Choeng Mon and Nathon. You choose the slot in the booking form and the driver comes to your hotel or villa lobby.
Transfer facts checked on 5 November 2026. Prices and party dates can change: the booking form always shows the current ones.
