The short answer
  • The New Year Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan is held on 31 December on Haad Rin beach: 2026-12-31 is a Thursday and 2027-12-31 is a Friday.
  • The New Year party draws up to 40,000 people, compared with around 20,000 at a regular Full Moon Party.
  • The transfer from Koh Samui costs ฿1190 one way or ฿1490 round trip on New Year, paid in cash at the pier.
  • The last hotel pickup on 31 December is 8:00 - 8:30 PM, earlier than on regular party nights.
  • Return boats leave Haad Rin pier every hour from 0:00 to 6:00, so you do not have to leave right after midnight.

The New Year Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan is the same beach party as every month, only bigger, busier and earlier to plan: up to 40,000 people on Haad Rin on 31 December, higher transfer prices and an earlier last pickup from Koh Samui. Picture the countdown on the sand, fireworks over the bay and the whole beach shouting at once, then picture getting back through that crowd. Both parts need a plan.

Here is what is different, what stays the same, and how to set up the night so it goes smoothly.

What is the New Year Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan?

It is the Full Moon Party held on New Year's Eve on Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach), instead of on a regular full moon night. The coming New Year parties are on 31 December 2026 (Thursday) and 31 December 2027 (Friday).

On New Year's Eve this stretch of beach fills earlier than usual, so arrive while there is still room to move.

Each year has 13 parties: 12 regular ones plus the New Year party on 31 December. In 2026 the regular December party is on 24 December (Thursday), a week before New Year, and in 2027 it is on 13 December (Monday). The full list is on the Full Moon Party schedule for 2026 and 2027.

The night itself follows the normal pattern: bars and music from the afternoon, the main party from dark, about 7 pm, until sunrise. Every bar along the beach plays its own style, from EDM and trance to reggae and hip hop, with fire shows and neon paint everywhere.

How big is the crowd on 31 December?

The New Year party draws up to 40,000 people, while a regular Full Moon Party draws around 20,000. That crowd is the single thing that changes the whole night.

Fire shows draw a dense ring of people; watch from a few rows back and keep your drink covered.

In practice it means longer queues at the bars and toilets, a packed shoreline at midnight and much more effort to find friends once you lose them. Phone signal can also be patchy when so many people are in one place, so do not count on messaging each other.

It is not for everyone. If big crowds make you anxious, a regular Full Moon Party is the better first experience, and the New Year night can wait for another year. For the background on how the party grew to this size, the Full Moon Party history page is a good read.

New Year transfer prices and the last pickup from Koh Samui

The transfer from Koh Samui costs more on New Year and the last pickup is earlier. On 31 December the last hotel pickup is 8:00 - 8:30 PM, while on regular party nights pickups go up to 10:00 - 10:30 PM.

Prices are per person. What is included does not change: pickup from your hotel or villa anywhere on Koh Samui, the minivan to Bangrak pier (Big Buddha area), the speedboat to Haad Rin pier, life jackets for every passenger and, with a round trip, the boat and minivan back to your hotel. Food, drinks and the beach entrance are extra.

Payment works the same way too: you book online for free and pay cash in Thai baht at the pier on the day. For a full night out, the guide to what the Full Moon Party really costs helps you plan the rest of the budget.

Why should you book the New Year transfer early?

Because the whole island chain is busy at New Year, and late planning leaves you with fewer choices. Booking costs nothing up front, so there is no reason to wait.

The minivan comes to your hotel lobby; be outside a few minutes early, drivers have tight lists on New Year.

Koh Samui hotels are full over the holidays, Koh Phangan near Haad Rin is often booked out with minimum stays, and many people decide on New Year plans at the last minute. If you know you are going, book the transfer when you book your hotel and pick a pickup slot that suits your evening.

A few things to sort before the day:

  • Choose a pickup slot no later than 8:00 - 8:30 PM, and earlier if you want to settle on the beach well before midnight.
  • Have the round trip price in cash, Thai baht, ready for the pier.
  • Bring 200 THB in cash for the beach entrance; there are no official online entry tickets.
  • If your plans change, let the booking team know through the contact form, since there is nothing to refund.

The Full Moon Party transfer from Koh Samui for New Year's Eve can be booked online now, with cash payment at the pier on 31 December.

Midnight on Haad Rin: fireworks and the countdown

Midnight is the peak of the night, with a countdown and, usually, fireworks over the bay. It is loud, crowded and happy, and it is the reason people pick this party over any other.

Choose your midnight spot with your group by 11 pm and stay there. Moving along the beach in the last half hour before midnight is slow, and that is when most people lose their friends.

Take the group photo before midnight, when everyone is still together and the phones still work.

Fireworks and sky lanterns are common at New Year on the islands, but they come close to people on a crowded beach. Keep some distance from anyone setting them off, and watch your feet on the sand, which collects broken glass and burnt-out fireworks as the night goes on.

Pace the drinks before midnight, too. Bucket drinks are strong and the bars are busier than ever, so it is easy to drink fast while you wait for the countdown and then miss the moment itself. Alternate with water, eat something on the way to the beach and keep one person in the group a little more sober than the rest. Nobody remembers a New Year they slept through on the sand.

How do you get back to Koh Samui after the New Year party?

The same way as on any party night: return boats leave Haad Rin pier every hour from 0:00 to 6:00. You do not choose the boat time in advance; you come to the pier, show your ticket badge and take the next boat.

Haad Rin pier is a few minutes walk from the beach, but with a New Year crowd, give yourself extra time to get there.

The difference is the number of people. With such a big crowd, expect the pier to be busier and the wait longer than on a normal night, especially for the first boats right after midnight. A smart plan is to skip the post-midnight rush: enjoy a few more hours on the beach and come to the pier later, when it is calmer.

On Koh Samui you are put on the transfer list and a minivan takes you back to your hotel. With a one way ticket you arrange the way back yourself. The full picture is on the page about getting back to Koh Samui after the party.

A simple plan for 31 December

Keep the day easy and the evening early. A plan that works well for most guests:

  1. Sleep in, eat a proper late lunch and drink plenty of water.
  2. Take an evening pickup, no later than the 8:00 - 8:30 PM slot.
  3. Pay at Bangrak pier, get your ticket badge and take the speedboat to Haad Rin, 20 to 30 minutes depending on the sea.
  4. Pay the 200 THB entrance in cash and find your midnight spot early.
  5. Head back to the pier when you are ready, any hour from 0:00 to 6:00, and ride the minivan to your hotel.

Bring little: cash, your phone in a waterproof pouch, a copy of your passport rather than the original, and shoes you do not mind ruining. That is all you need for the biggest night of the year on Haad Rin.

Think about 1 January too. You will be back at your Koh Samui hotel in the early morning, so keep the next day free: no early flight, no ferry, no tour. A slow day by the pool, with plenty of water and a big lunch, is the best way to start the year after a night like this.

If the dates do not suit your trip, a regular party is a fine alternative with the same beach, the same music and a smaller crowd. In December 2026 that means 24 December (Thursday), a week earlier, at the regular transfer prices.

Questions and answers

Is the New Year party more expensive than a regular Full Moon Party?

The transfer from Koh Samui is: ฿1190 one way or ฿1490 round trip per person on New Year, compared with ฿890 and ฿1290 on regular nights. The beach entrance is 200 THB in cash.

Can I buy New Year Full Moon Party tickets online?

There are no official online entry tickets. You pay the entrance in cash at the beach. What you can book online is the transfer from Koh Samui, for free, with payment at the pier.

What happens if I miss the last pickup on 31 December?

The last hotel pickup on New Year is 8:00 - 8:30 PM, and regular ferries stop in the early evening. Pick a slot with time to spare and be in your hotel lobby a little early.

Is the New Year party a good first Full Moon Party?

It can be, if you like big crowds. If you are unsure, a regular party with around 20,000 people is easier to enjoy and to get around. The New Year night is louder, fuller and slower to move through.

Do I need to leave right after midnight to catch a boat?

No. Boats leave Haad Rin pier every hour from 0:00 to 6:00. Many people stay on the beach after midnight and head to the pier later, when the rush has calmed down.

Is there a Full Moon Party in December apart from New Year?

Yes. In 2026 there is a regular party on 24 December (Thursday) and the New Year party on 31 December (Thursday). In 2027 the regular December party is on 13 December (Monday).

Is the speedboat safe on New Year's Eve?

Every passenger gets a life jacket, and bigger boats go in the high season when there are more guests. The ride takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on the sea.
