- The Full Moon Party is held on Haad Rin Nok, also called Sunrise Beach, on the east side of the Haad Rin peninsula at the south-east tip of Koh Phangan.
- Haad Rin Nai is the quieter bay on the other side of the village, and the village between the two bays is where you walk from the pier to the party.
- Speedboats from Koh Samui arrive at Haad Rin pier, a few minutes walk from the party, and return boats leave every hour from 0:00 to 6:00.
- Entrance to the beach costs 200 THB in cash, and there are no official online entry tickets.
- The party runs from about 7 pm until sunrise, about 6 to 7 am, when the east-facing beach gets the first light.
Haad Rin beach is really two beaches on one narrow peninsula: the party happens on Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) on the east side, while Haad Rin Nai on the west side stays much quieter, with Haad Rin village squeezed in between. Once you have that picture in your head, the rest of the night is easy to find.
The moment it clicks for most people is the walk from the pier: shops and noodle stalls, music getting louder, then the street opens and the whole beach is in front of you, a long curve of sand with a wall of lit-up bars and thousands of people in neon.
Haad Rin Nok or Haad Rin Nai: which beach is the party on?
The Full Moon Party is on Haad Rin Nok, the east-facing bay also called Sunrise Beach. Haad Rin Nai, on the other side of the village, is not the party beach, even though taxis, maps and some guests mix the two names up.
The two bays face opposite directions. Haad Rin Nok looks east, so it gets the sunrise that ends the party; Haad Rin Nai looks west, gets the sunset, and on party night feels like a different island.
| Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) | Haad Rin Nai | |
|---|---|---|
| Faces | East, sunrise | West, sunset |
| On party night | The Full Moon Party, bars and sound systems all along the sand | Much quieter, some bars and restaurants |
| Entrance fee | 200 THB cash at the entrance | No party entrance |
| Good for | Dancing, fire shows, the crowd | A calmer drink, a break, sleeping later |
My view: if you sleep on Haad Rin, a room on the Nai side or up the hill is often nicer than one right on the party beach. You are still a short walk from the action and you might actually sleep the next day. Book early though: rooms near Haad Rin are often booked out and minimum stays are common around the party.
From the pier to the sand: how do you get onto Haad Rin beach?
Speedboats from Koh Samui land at Haad Rin pier, and the party is a few minutes walk from the pier through Haad Rin village. You do not need a taxi or a map: follow the crowd and the bass.
The village between the two bays is a tight grid of small streets with shops, food stalls, pharmacies, body paint stands and bucket sellers. On party night it is packed, slow, and fun to walk through, but it is also where people first get separated from their friends, so stay close until you reach the beach.
At the entrance to the beach you pay the entrance fee of 200 THB in cash. There are no official online entry tickets, so ignore anyone who offers you one. The details are on our page about Full Moon Party tickets and the entrance fee.
The night speedboat from Koh Samui is the easiest way to be here without a room on Koh Phangan, with hotel pickup and a boat back every hour after midnight.
Staying on Koh Samui? Hotel pickup, speedboat from Bangrak pier to Haad Rin and boats back every hour from 0:00 to 6:00. One way ฿890, round trip ฿1290, free booking, pay cash at the pier.
Book your transferHow is Haad Rin beach laid out on party night?
Think of Haad Rin beach as three strips running along the bay: the bars at the back, the dancing sand in the middle, and the water line at the front. The bars sit almost shoulder to shoulder along the back of the beach, each with its own sound system and style.
Each bar has its own music: EDM, trance, techno, house, drum and bass, reggae, hip hop and more, and the sound changes every few steps. In front of the bars the sand turns into one long dance floor, with fire shows in open patches where the crowd makes a ring.
- Back of the beach: bars, sound systems, podiums, the loudest part.
- Middle of the sand: dancing, bucket stalls, fire shows, the thickest crowd.
- Water line: cooler air, more space, people sitting and talking.
- The ends of the bay: where the bars thin out and the beach runs into rocks.
The centre of the beach, closest to the main streets from the village, is the busiest from around midnight. If you want the full party feeling, that is where to be. If you want to talk, or you are not into crowds, drift towards either end. For what the night actually feels like, read what the Full Moon Party is like.
The quieter ends of the bay
Towards the ends of the beach the bars get smaller, the music drops a notch and you can sit on the sand without being stepped on. These are the places to catch your breath, drink water and regroup, and many guests spend a surprising part of the night there.
The flip side: the ends are darker and emptier, the beach turns into rocks, and that is where phones, bags and people tend to go missing. Go there with a friend, not alone, and do not climb the rocks after drinking.
Where to meet friends on Haad Rin beach
Meet at something fixed and easy to describe, like the entrance where you paid or a big lit sign, not "by the fire show". Agree the place and a set time before you split up, because the mobile network is often overloaded and messages arrive late.
The water line is a good second option. Pick a spot, look at what is behind it (a particular bar, a sign, a gap between buildings) and say it out loud. Avoid the centre of the beach as a meeting point after midnight: you can stand five metres from a friend and never see them.
The pier is the last safety net. Return boats leave Haad Rin pier every hour from 0:00 to 6:00, so "if we lose each other, we meet at the pier at the next full hour" is a rule that works even with a dead phone.
Where are the toilets, food and drinks?
Toilets, food and drink are mostly behind and between the bars and in the village streets just off the beach. Do not expect a public toilet block on the sand.
Bars and businesses along the beach usually have toilets, sometimes for a small fee, and the queues grow long after midnight. Go before you need to, go in pairs, and carry a few small notes and tissues. Please do not use the sea: people swim and sit there all night.
Food is easy. The village streets behind the beach are full of stalls and small restaurants: noodles, fried rice, toasties, fruit, grilled skewers, and it is the best break of the night. Water is sold everywhere; buy it, and drink it between buckets. Food and drinks are not part of any transfer, so bring cash for them.
What is the sunrise end of the beach like?
The party goes on until sunrise, about 6 to 7 am, and because Haad Rin Nok faces east, the sun comes up over the sea in front of the bars. The main party starts at dark, about 7 pm, so by sunrise you have seen the whole cycle of the night.
At that hour the beach looks very different: the crowd has thinned out, people sit in the sand watching the sky, a few sound systems keep going and the cleaning starts. It is quieter, slightly surreal, and for many guests the best part.
Be honest with yourself about the timing if you are going back to Koh Samui. The last return boat leaves Haad Rin pier at 6:00, so if you want the sunrise and the boat, walk back through the village in good time. More on that in how to get back to Koh Samui after the party.
A quick plan for finding your way around
Most people need only a few habits to feel at home on Haad Rin beach all night:
- On the walk from the pier, notice the street you came down and the shops on the corner.
- Pay the 200 THB at the entrance and take a photo of it.
- Walk the full length of the bar line once, early, before it gets packed.
- Agree a meeting point and set times with your friends.
- Use the village for food, water and a break from the noise.
- Head for the pier well before the 6:00 boat if you are going back to Koh Samui.
Check the date on the Full Moon Party schedule before you plan anything: the next party is on 2026-10-27 (Tuesday).
Questions and answers
Is Haad Rin beach worth visiting when there is no party?
Yes, if you like a lively beach town. On normal days Haad Rin Nok is a wide sandy bay with longtail boats and bars, and Haad Rin Nai is calmer. Just know that the area is built around the party, so it feels quiet and a bit tired on off days.
Can you swim at Haad Rin beach during the party?
People do go in the water, but it is not a good idea at night after drinking. It is dark, crowded, and nobody is watching. Paddle at most, keep your shoes and phone with a friend, and swim the next afternoon instead.
Do I need shoes on Haad Rin beach?
Yes. After a few hours the sand has broken glass, bottle caps and spilled drinks in it. Wear closed shoes or sandals with straps that stay on your feet.
How long is the walk from Haad Rin pier to the party?
A few minutes through Haad Rin village. Allow more time on the way back at night, when the streets are full and you are tired.
Is there a cash machine in Haad Rin?
There are usually ATMs in the village, but they can run out of cash or have queues on party night. Bring enough Thai baht with you for the entrance, drinks and food, and keep it in a waterproof pouch.
What time should I arrive at Haad Rin beach?
Bars and music start in the afternoon, and the main party starts at dark, about 7 pm. Arriving around dark lets you walk the beach while you can still move, then watch it fill up.
Is Haad Rin beach the same as Sunrise Beach?
The party beach, Haad Rin Nok, is the one called Sunrise Beach. Haad Rin as a name covers the whole area: both bays and the village between them.
